A Note From Kate

Dear Friends,
I always have difficulty imagining the new year mid-winter as a fresh start. Isn't winter a time of hibernation, rest, and reflection? Also, resolutions never really resonate with me. I make changes as I go. Much like fishing, right?
You fish for a trout, and it won't take your mouse, and up until this point, you were planning on fishing a mouse pattern ALL day, no matter what. But now that you see that trout and it will NOT come up, move water, and voraciously smash that tiny little mammal, it's time to try something else.
And so you try a caddis, most likely an elk hair or Goddard, and nope, it isn't even looking up. If you're a purist on a famous Montana blue-ribbon trout stream, you might move on, but if you're in Alaska, you are about to cut that rather large tippet (for a dry) and slide a streamer on.
Maybe you choose a Dolly Llama or a more obscure, less-known fly that everyone calls a -insert color- streamer. Of course, you strip that Fly, swing it and dead drift it, and if that trout is still so stuck in its ways like the politics of 2024, then you may consider the fish won't eat. But the ONLY way to really know that is to try a bead. The good old-fashioned French fry of an Alaskan river, whether you're hungry or not, you want a couple at least.
So you do, and you catch the trout. It's the most epic experience because you worked and put in effort, diligence, and even perseverance. And if the trout doesn't eat, then you know you gave it your all.
So, either way, you walk away proud. And friends, that's how we view The Lodge at 58 North. We're going to give you everything and our all because we love what we do, we love Bristol Bay and we love you.
Resolutions are OUT, giving our best all year long is IN.
