Brooks Falls

The Falls

Brooks Falls, situated within Katmai National Park on the Brooks River, is celebrated for its dramatic salmon leaps and exceptional brown bear viewing. From July to September, brown bears gather at the falls for prime fishing, creating iconic photo opportunities often shared worldwide via the Brooks Falls Bearcam. Visiting in person offers a unique experience with the Falls Platform providing an unparalleled view of the feeding bears. The walk from Brooks Camp to the platforms is just over half a mile, and our team ensures a safe journey.

Additionally, the Riffles Platform downstream and the lower river platform near Brooks Camp offer varied perspectives of the bears and scenic views of Naknek Lake. July sees the highest concentration of bears at Brooks Falls, with dozens present daily. With bear hunting banned, the park supports a robust population of approximately 2,200 brown bears, making Brooks Falls an outstanding destination for both fishing and wildlife viewing.

Fishing the Brooks River

The Brooks River offers exceptional fly fishing opportunities, targeting rainbow trout throughout its two-mile stretch. We begin fishing the river on the June 8th opener and continue until mid-October.

While other local streams boast impressive trout in the 16-24” range, Brooks River also holds the potential for trophy-sized fish up to 28” or 29”. Fishing in this stunning setting, where you might encounter giant brown bears, adds an extraordinary element to the experience, making it a premier destination for anglers seeking both adventure and top-notch fishing.

"Whether you are a solo angler, want to fish with your spouse, or bring your kids along, the lodge & team will provide the best Alaska has to offer. My wife & adult children, not anglers at all, will tell you stories with bears, moose, king salmon, weathering storms, leaking waders, and laughing so hard at times we almost fell out of the boat. Kate, Justin, Jason and the team really care about their guest and will do everything possible to make sure you have the time of your life. Don’t miss this!"
