Kick Off the Season - June 8th Opener
The recreational fishing season in Bristol Bay begins on June 8th, marking the start of an exciting time for anglers. During this period, we focus on rainbow trout in several small streams within Katmai National Park. After a long winter under ice and a busy spring spawn, these trout are exceptionally hungry and eager to bite. With no spawning salmon in their waters yet, these fish are feeding heavily on natural foods like lamprey, salmon smolt, fry, and even mice. To catch these ravenous trout, we use a variety of effective techniques, including streamers, mouse patterns, and dry flies.
July Fishing: Streamers & Salmon Spawn
Throughout July, streamer fishing remains productive. As the month progresses and the sockeye salmon begin their spawning run towards the end of July, the fishing action heats up. The arrival of sockeye salmon floods the small streams with protein-rich eggs, and the trout become intensely focused on this new food source. This is a prime time to target trout that are actively feeding on the abundant eggs.
Fishing Options & Techniques
We offer diverse fishing options to suit every angler’s preference:
- Float Plane Adventures: We use float planes to access remote ponds and rivers, allowing us to walk and wade while fishing around the spawning sockeye. This method provides a unique opportunity to target trout behind the spawning salmon.
- Raft Trips: We drift down rivers, fishing along the way, and get picked up at the end of the day. This approach offers a dynamic way to explore and fish different sections of the river.
As summer wanes, we transition from small stream fishing to larger lake-headed systems with sockeye spawning well into the fall.
Big Water Trout Fishing: The Naknek & Kvichak Rivers
We’re passionate about chasing giant trout, which is one reason we call the Naknek River home. However, the Naknek isn’t the only location where we pursue trophy trout. In most years, the Naknek doesn’t see significant numbers of large fish until mid-September. Before then, we head to the renowned Kvichak River, where we have boats stored for daily fly-out trout fishing. On the Kvichak, we cover miles of river each day, focusing on areas around spawning salmon using egg patterns. For those who prefer to fish from shore, we offer miles of channels and braids ideal for walk-and-wade fishing.
Late-Season Trout: Streamers & Trophy Opportunities
As the season progresses, we shift from egg patterns to streamers for targeting trout. The Naknek River, in particular, offers some of the best opportunities to catch trout over 30 inches. In early September, trout migrate from Naknek Lake to feed on sockeye salmon eggs near the lake outlet and then move down into the river. We primarily target these large trout with streamers, using either single or double-hand rods.
