Fishing for these vibrant fish in August and early September promises hard-hitting action, thrilling battles, and beautiful fillets to bring home.
Identifying Coho Salmon
Coho salmon are distinct from king salmon in a few key ways. Unlike kings, silvers lack the black spots on the lower lobe of their tail and have white gums. Spawning adult cohos display dark backs and heads with maroon to reddish sides. Males can develop a noticeable hook in their nose, known as a kype.
Top Coho Fishing Locations
Our coho fishing adventures offer a variety of exciting opportunities, depending on the timing and location. We might fish on our home water, the Naknek River, or venture out to other prime spots like the Alagnak River, Nushagak River, or various streams in the Becharof and Ugashik river systems.
Fishing Right from the Lodge
When fishing right from our lodge on the Naknek River, we use our high-quality Willie river boats, which are conveniently located close to the lodge. This allows for easy access to some of the best coho fishing spots right on our doorstep.
Fly-Out Fishing Experience
For an added adventure, we offer fly-out fishing trips. From our airplane, we spot fish and select the best landing spots based on our findings. Guests love the thrill of this unique experience and the opportunity to fish in remote, pristine locations.
Fishing Techniques and Gear
Our coho fishing techniques are diverse and hands-on. We may use fly rods with streamers or topwater flies, or spinning rods with spinners, jigs, and topwater lures. Each method provides a different thrill, and coho salmon are an exciting target species for all these tactics.
